ノルウェー上空のオーロラコロナ
Auroral Corona over Norway
最高峰の山よりも高いところに、オーロラの領域が広がっています。オーロラはめったに高度60キロメートル以下に達することはなく、最大1000キロメートルに及ぶこともあります。オーロラの光は、高エネルギーの電子と陽子が地球の大気中の原子や分子に衝突することによって生じます。やや珍しい現象ですが、オーロラコロナが周囲のオーロラの中心点として現れ、オーロラが真上に発生した場合や、オーロラ光線が観測者の方にほぼ向いている場合に発生することがあります。この絵のように美しい、しかし短時間しか続かない緑と紫のオーロラは、先月、ノルウェーのトロムセ県クヴァリヤの上空で発生しました。前景にはセシフィヨルドが流れ、遠くには無数の星が見えます。APOD壁掛けカレンダー：陸と空の風景

Higher than the highest mountain lies the realm of the aurora. Auroras rarely reach below 60 kilometers, and can range up to 1000 kilometers. Aurora light results from energetic electrons and protons striking atoms and molecules in the Earth's atmosphere. Somewhat uncommon, an auroral corona appears as a center point for a surrounding display and may occur when an aurora develops directly overhead, or when auroral rays are pointed nearly toward the observer. This picturesque but brief green and purple aurora exhibition occurred last month high above Kval�ya, Troms�, Norway.
