キリン座のNGC 2403
NGC 2403 in Camelopardalis
壮大な島宇宙NGC 2403は、首の長い星座キリン座の境界内に位置しています。約1000万光年離れたところにあり、直径は約5万光年のこの渦巻銀河には、原子水素ガス特有の赤みがかった輝きで示される巨大な星形成HII領域が数多く存在するようです。巨大なHII領域は、短く激しい一生の終わりに明るい超新星として爆発する高温の巨大な星の集団によってエネルギーを得ています。M81銀河群の一員であるNGC 2403は、私たちの銀河群M33（さんかく座銀河）内にある、星形成領域が豊富な別の銀河によく似ています。このカラフルなNGC 2403銀河の肖像画では、尖った外観の明るい星が、私たちの天の川銀河の中に前景に描かれています。

Magnificent island universe NGC 2403 stands within the boundaries of the long-necked constellation Camelopardalis. Some 10 million light-years distant and about 50,000 light-years across, the spiral galaxy also seems to have more than its fair share of giant star forming HII regions, marked by the telltale reddish glow of atomic hydrogen gas. The giant HII regions are energized by clusters of hot, massive stars that explode as bright supernovae at the end of their short and furious lives. A member of the M81 group of galaxies, NGC 2403 closely resembles another galaxy with an abundance of star forming regions that lies within our own local galaxy group, M33 the Triangulum Galaxy.
