銀河に先立つ流星 Meteor before Galaxy

アンドロメダ銀河の手前にある緑色の筋は何でしょう？それは流星です。2016年、ペルセウス座流星群のピーク付近でアンドロメダ銀河を撮影していたところ、深宇宙から飛来した砂粒ほどの大きさの流星が、天の川銀河の遥か彼方の伴銀河であるアンドロメダ銀河のすぐ前を横切りました。この小さな流星は、わずか10度の視野を通過するのにほんの一瞬しかかかりませんでした。地球の大気圏に突入する際に激しく減速し、何度か閃光を放ちました。緑色は、少なくとも部分的には、流星のガスが蒸発する際に光ったことによるものです。撮影はペルセウス座流星群の流星を捉えるようにタイミングを合わせて行われましたが、写っている筋の向きは、数週間前にピークを迎えたみずがめ座デルタ流星群の流星により近いようです。偶然にも、ペルセウス座流星群は今夜再びピークを迎えます。ギャラリー：NASAによるパーカー太陽探査機の打ち上げ

What's that green streak in front of the Andromeda galaxy? A meteor. While photographing the Andromeda galaxy in 2016, near the peak of the Perseid Meteor Shower, a sand-sized rock from deep space crossed right in front of our Milky Way Galaxy's far-distant companion. The small meteor took only a fraction of a second to pass through this 10-degree field. The meteor flared several times while braking violently upon entering Earth's atmosphere. The green color was created, at least in part, by the meteor's gas glowing as it vaporized. Although the exposure was timed to catch a Perseids meteor, the orientation of the imaged streak seems a better match to a meteor from the Southern Delta Aquariids, a meteor shower that peaked a few weeks earlier.
