Leaving Earth
地球を離れるとはどんな光景だろうか？ 2005年、水星に向かう途中で地球を通り過ぎたMESSENGER探査機が、その様子を非常に詳細に記録した。このタイムラプス動画では、地球が遠ざかるにつれて自転している様子が見られる。太陽の光が当たっている地球の半分は非常に明るいため、背景の星は見えない。ロボット探査機MESSENGERは現在水星の周回軌道上にあり、最近、水星表面の初の完全な地図の作成を完了した。MESSENGERは時折、故郷の地球を振り返り続けている。MESSENGERは、地球上で作られ、地球を離れ、二度と戻ってこない数少ないものの1つである。ミッションの終わりに、MESSENGERは水星の表面に衝突した。

What it would look like to leave planet Earth? Such an event was recorded visually in great detail by the MESSENGER spacecraft as it swung back past the Earth in 2005 on its way in toward the planet Mercury. Earth can be seen rotating in this time-lapse video, as it recedes into the distance. The sunlit half of Earth is so bright that background stars are not visible. The robotic MESSENGER spacecraft is now in orbit around Mercury and has recently concluded the first complete map of the surface. On occasion, MESSENGER has continued to peer back at its home world. MESSENGER is one of the few things created on the Earth that has left and will never return -- at the end of its mission MESSENGER crashed into Mercury's surface.
