宇宙的な抱擁に包まれた2つの巨大銀河が、この鮮明な望遠鏡視野の中心で合体している。相互作用する銀河系はArp 93としてカタログ化されており、地球の空ではみずがめ座の方向に約2億光年離れている。個々の銀河はNGC 7285（右）とNGC 7284として識別されている。明るい中心部はまだ約2万光年離れているが、進行中の重力相互作用の結果、巨大な潮汐流がフレームの下に向かって20万光年以上広がっている。相互作用する銀河は確かに奇妙に見えるが、現在では宇宙では一般的であることが分かっている。実際、より身近なところでは、巨大な渦巻銀河アンドロメダ銀河が天の川銀河に接近していることが知られている。Arp 93は、遠い未来に起こるであろうアンドロメダ銀河の宇宙的な抱擁の類似例となるかもしれない。 APODへの注目すべき投稿：2023年のペルセウス座流星群

Locked in a cosmic embrace, two large galaxies are merging at the center of this sharp telescopic field of view. The interacting system cataloged as Arp 93 is some 200 million light-years distant toward the constellation Aquarius in planet Earth's sky. Individually the galaxies are identified as NGC 7285 (right) and NGC 7284. Their bright cores are still separated by about 20,000 light-years or so, but a massive tidal stream, a result of their ongoing gravitational interaction, extends over 200,000 light-years toward the bottom of the frame. Interacting galaxies do look peculiar, but are now understood to be common in the Universe. In fact, closer to home, the large spiral Andromeda Galaxy is known to be approaching the Milky Way. Arp 93 may well present an analog of their distant future cosmic embrace. Notable submissions to APOD: Perseids Meteor Shower 2023
