通信塔の上空に現れるオーロラ Aurora Over a Communications Tower

最も高い通信塔よりも、最も高い山よりも、最も高い飛行機よりも高いところに、オーロラの領域があります。オーロラはめったに高度60キロメートル以下に達することはなく、最大で1000キロメートルに及ぶこともあります。オーロラの光は、高エネルギーの電子と陽子が地球の大気中の分子に衝突することによって発生します。宇宙から見ると、完全なオーロラは地球の磁極の1つを囲む円として現れることがよくあります。上の写真は、8月30日にノルウェーのハルスタッド上空で発生した、特に珍しい紫色のオーロラコロナです。

Higher than highest communications tower, higher than highest mountain, higher than highest airplane, lies the realm of the aurora. Auroras rarely reach below 60 kilometers, and can range up to 1000 kilometers. Aurora light results from energetic electrons and protons striking molecules in the Earth's atmosphere. Frequently, when viewed from space, a complete aurora will appear as a circle around one of the Earth's magnetic poles. Pictured above is a particularly rare purple auroral corona that occurred on August 30, high above Harstad, Norway.
