The Sombrero Galaxy from Hubble
なぜソンブレロ銀河は帽子のように見えるのでしょうか？その理由は、ソンブレロ銀河の異常に大きく広がった中心の星々のバルジと、ほぼ真横から見える円盤に現れる暗く目立つ塵の筋にあります。数十億もの古い星々が、広がった中心のバルジの拡散した輝きを生み出しています。上の写真のバルジをよく見ると、多くの光点が実際には球状星団であることが分かります。M104の壮大なダストリングには、より若く明るい星々が数多く含まれており、天文学者たちがまだ完全には理解していない複雑な詳細が示されています。ソンブレロ銀河の中心部は電磁スペクトル全体にわたって輝き、巨大なブラックホールが存在すると考えられています。5000万年前のソンブレロ銀河の光は、おとめ座の方向を小型望遠鏡で見ることができます。APODをFacebook、Google Plus、またはTwitterでフォローしてください。

Why does the Sombrero Galaxy look like a hat? Reasons include the Sombrero's unusually large and extended central bulge of stars, and dark prominent dust lanes that appear in a disk that we see nearly edge-on. Billions of old stars cause the diffuse glow of the extended central bulge. Close inspection of the bulge in the above photograph shows many points of light that are actually globular clusters. M104's spectacular dust rings harbor many younger and brighter stars, and show intricate details astronomers don't yet fully understand. The very center of the Sombrero glows across the electromagnetic spectrum, and is thought to house a large black hole. Fifty million-year-old light from the Sombrero Galaxy can be seen with a small telescope towards the constellation of Virgo. Follow APOD on: Facebook, Google Plus, or Twitter
