渦巻銀河NGC 5643の中心では何が起こっているのでしょうか？星とガスの渦巻く円盤であるNGC 5643は、ハッブル宇宙望遠鏡が撮影した特集画像に見られるように、青い渦状腕と茶色の塵が特徴的です。この活動銀河の中心は、2つのジェットが発見された場所で、電波とX線で明るく輝いています。珍しい中心部の輝きにより、NGC 5643はセイファート銀河の最も近い例の1つとなっています。セイファート銀河では、大量の輝くガスが中心の巨大ブラックホールに落ち込んでいると考えられています。NGC 5643は比較的近く、5500万光年離れており、直径は約10万光年で、オオカミ座（オオカミ座）の方向に小型望遠鏡で見ることができます。

What's happening at the center of spiral galaxy NGC 5643? A swirling disk of stars and gas, NGC 5643's appearance is dominated by blue spiral arms and brown dust, as shown in the featured image taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. The core of this active galaxy glows brightly in radio waves and X-rays where twin jets have been found. An unusual central glow makes NGC 5643 one of the closest examples of the Seyfert class of galaxies, where vast amounts of glowing gas are thought to be falling into a central massive black hole. NGC 5643, is a relatively close 55 million light years away, spans about 100 thousand light years across, and can be seen with a small telescope towards the constellation of the Wolf (Lupus).
