渦巻銀河深部領域
Whirlpool Galaxy Deep Field
北斗七星の柄を柄杓のくぼみから離れてたどって、柄の最後の明るい星にたどり着くまで進みます。それから、望遠鏡を少し南西にスライドさせるだけで、シャルル・メシエの有名なカタログの51番目のエントリである、この見事な相互作用銀河のペアが見つかるかもしれません。おそらく最初の渦巻星雲である、明確な渦巻構造を持つ大きな銀河は、NGC 5194としてもカタログ化されています。その渦状腕とダストレーンは、伴銀河（左）NGC 5195の前をはっきりと掃引しています。このペアは約3100万光年離れており、公式には小さな星座であるりょうけん座の角の範囲内にあります。M51は人間の目にはかすかでぼやけて見えますが、先月撮影された上記の長時間露光の深視野画像には、実際にはこの小さな銀河を取り囲んでいるかすかな複雑さの多くが示されています。

Follow the handle of the Big Dipper away from the dipper's bowl, until you get to the handle's last bright star. Then, just slide your telescope a little south and west and you might find this stunning pair of interacting galaxies, the 51st entry in Charles Messier's famous catalog. Perhaps the original spiral nebula, the large galaxy with well defined spiral structure is also cataloged as NGC 5194. Its spiral arms and dust lanes clearly sweep in front of its companion galaxy (left), NGC 5195. The pair are about 31 million light-years distant and officially lie within the angular boundaries of the small constellation Canes Venatici. Though M51 looks faint and fuzzy to the human eye, the above long-exposure, deep-field image taken last month shows much of the faint complexity that actually surrounds the smaller galaxy.
