りゅうこつ座の大星雲 The Great Nebula in Carina

天の川銀河の中でも特に明るい領域の一つに、奇妙な現象が起こる星雲があります。りゅうこつ座大星雲として知られるNGC 3372は、巨大な星と変化する星雲の宝庫です。画像の中心のすぐ右にある明るい構造であるキーホール星雲（NGC 3324）には、こうした巨大な星がいくつか存在し、その外観も変化しています。ここに写っているりゅうこつ座大星雲全体は、300光年以上に渡り、りゅうこつ座の約7,500光年離れた場所に位置しています。この星雲で最もエネルギーの高い星であるイータ・カリーナは、1830年代には夜空で最も明るい星の一つでしたが、その後劇的に暗くなりました。イータ・カリーナ自体は超新星爆発の瀬戸際にあるかもしれませんが、X線画像によると、りゅうこつ座大星雲の大部分はまさに超新星工場だったようです。無料講演会：APOD編集者が6月30日にプラハで講演

In one of the brightest parts of Milky Way lies a nebula where some of the oddest things occur. NGC 3372, known as the Great Nebula in Carina, is home to massive stars and changing nebulas. The Keyhole Nebula (NGC 3324), the bright structure just to the right of the image center, houses several of these massive stars and has itself changed its appearance. The entire Carina Nebula, captured here, spans over 300 light years and lies about 7,500 light-years away in the constellation of Carina. Eta Carinae, the most energetic star in the nebula, was one of the brightest stars in the sky in the 1830s, but then faded dramatically. While Eta Carinae itself maybe on the verge of a supernova explosion, X-ray images indicate that much of the Great Nebula in Carina has been a veritable supernova factory.
