皆既日食の束の間の暗闇の中でのみ、太陽コロナの光がはっきりと見える。普段は明るい太陽円盤に圧倒される広大なコロナ、つまり太陽の外層大気は、魅惑的な光景である。しかし、コロナの微妙なディテールや明るさの極端な変化は、肉眼では識別できるものの、写真に収めるのは非常に難しいことで知られている。しかし、ここに掲載されているのは、120枚以上の画像と綿密なデジタル処理を用いて、2017年8月の皆既日食の際に撮影された太陽コロナの詳細な広角画像である。高温ガスと磁場が絶えず変化する混合物の複雑な層と輝く集光がはっきりと見える。月と太陽の後ろには、11等級ほどの暗い星が数百個見え、右端には火星が赤く写っている。次の皆既日食は7月2日に起こり、チリとアルゼンチンを横切る細い帯状の地域で日没時に見ることができる。

Only in the fleeting darkness of a total solar eclipse is the light of the solar corona easily visible. Normally overwhelmed by the bright solar disk, the expansive corona, the sun's outer atmosphere, is an alluring sight. But the subtle details and extreme ranges in the corona's brightness, although discernible to the eye, are notoriously difficult to photograph. Pictured here, however, using over 120 images and meticulous digital processing, is a detailed wide-angle image of the Sun's corona taken during the Great American Eclipse in 2017 August. Clearly visible are intricate layers and glowing caustics of an ever changing mixture of hot gas and magnetic fields. Hundreds of stars as faint as 11th magnitude are visible behind the Moon and Sun, with Mars appearing in red on the far right. The next total eclipse of the Sun will occur on July 2 and be visible during sunset from a thin swath across Chile and Argentina.
