昨日、協定世界時午前10時頃、火星と地球が約6万年ぶりに最も接近しました。火星は赤く輝き、日没直後の東の空で最も明るい天体として見えます。しかし、火星の最高の眺めは、現在火星を周回している探査機マーズ・グローバル・サーベイヤーとマーズ・オデッセイから得られるでしょう。今回の接近をきっかけに、火星に向けて4機の新たな探査機が打ち上げられ、そのうちのいくつかは来年初めに着陸機を展開し、私たちの惑星の隣人である火星のさらに壮観な眺めを地球に届けてくれるでしょう。上の写真は、アメリカ合衆国ネバダ州バレー・オブ・ファイア州立公園のエレファント・ロックの背後、南東の空に昇る火星を撮影したものです。

Yesterday, at about 10 am Universal Time, Mars and Earth passed closer than in nearly 60,000 years. Mars, noticeably red, remains the brightest object in the eastern sky just after sunset. The best views of Mars, however, will continue to be from the robot spacecraft currently orbiting Mars: the Mars Global Surveyor and the Mars Odyssey. The current pass sparked the launching of four new spacecraft toward Mars, some of which will deploy landers early next year and likely return even more spectacular views of our planetary neighbor.
