壮大な渦巻銀河は、しばしばすべての栄光を手にしているように見える。新しく形成された、美しく対称的な渦巻腕に沿った明るく青い星団は、間違いなく注目を集める。しかし、約1200万光年離れたNGC 4449のように、小さな不規則銀河も星を形成する。よく研究されているこの銀河は、私たちの天の川銀河の伴銀河である大マゼラン雲（LMC）と大きさが似ており、しばしば比較される。この美しいカラー画像には、LMCの特徴でもあるNGC 4449の全体的な棒状と、点在する若い青い星団が写っている。下部近くには、巨大な星形成領域を示す特徴的な水素原子ガスのピンクがかった輝きがある。NGC 4449は、りょうけん座にある銀河群の一員である。実際、近くの銀河との相互作用がNGC 4449での星形成に影響を与えていると考えられている。

Grand spiral galaxies often seem to get all the glory. Their newly formed, bright, blue star clusters along beautiful, symmetric spiral arms are guaranteed to attract attention. But small irregular galaxies form stars too, like NGC 4449, located about 12 million light-years away. The well-studied galaxy is similar in size, and often compared to our Milky Way's satellite galaxy, the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). This lovely color image shows NGC 4449's general bar shape, also characteristic of the LMC, with scattered young blue star clusters. Near the bottom is the pinkish glow of atomic hydrogen gas, the telltale tracer of massive star forming regions. NGC 4449 is a member of a group of galaxies found in the constellation Canes Venatici. In fact, interactions with nearby galaxies are thought to have influenced star formation in NGC 4449.
